Wrestling for a Blessing
Everyone needs a fresh encounter with God!
What do you keep wrestling with? Running away from?
-what are you trying to prove?
-who must you impress to be happy?
-what in your past are you ashamed of?
-who let you down, caused you to only trust yourself?
Jacob was wrestling for a blessing!
-He wanted what only God could give him
-Jacob encountered God as a young man- Gen 28:10-22
-God promised to bless him!
-Jacob gave a conditional promise to worship God (vs 20-22)
-Now Jacob needed to surrender unconditionally!
1. God met Jacob personally
-a man wrestled with Jacob
-vs 28 “strives with God”
-vs 30 Jacob said he saw God face to face
-God wrestled with Jacob
-Jacob had been wrestling with people all his life!
-Jacob wrestled with his brother in the womb
-He grabbed Esau’s heel at birth, born second
-He took advantage of Esau and obtained the birthright
-He stole Esau’s blessing from Isaac
-He quarreled with his father-in-law Laban
-How is God meeting you today?
-What is your greatest need right now?
2. God ended Jacob’s wrestling days
-God dislocated Jacob’s hip, made him helpless to fight Esau
-Jacob had to completely depend on God now
-Jacob realized he was no match for God!
-What do you keep trusting ahead of God?
3. Jacob held on for God’s blessing
-“Bless me!” He went from defiance to reliance
-Blessing- to know you are accepted by God, secure in God
-Jacob needed God to bless Him like no other person had/could
-second born, not Isaac’s favorite son
-stolen blessing- didn’t receive it legitimately
-ran away from Esau’s death threat
-cheated out by his father-in-law
-What blessing are you fighting for today?
-do you keep fighting to find significance and worth in
The eyes of others? In the eyes of yourself?
-Hold onto God right now! Ask for His blessing
4. God made Jacob face himself
-“What is your name?”
-Jacob- heel grabber, deceiver
-We must get real with God and with ourselves!
-what are you running from? Ashamed of? Upset about?
5. God renames him Israel
-Israel= strives with God
-no longer a deceiver of men, no longer second rate
-God is offering you a new name:
-Forgiven, accepted, loved, adopted, child of God, righteous
6. Jacob fully trusted God
-He named the place “Face of God”
-He limped away- fully dependent on God’s protection
-how we face physical weaknesses reveals how much we
What blessing are you wrestling for?
God is available right now to meet your deepest need
What must you confess to God? Get real with God today!
What or who are you trusting in more than God?
