Step Out and Trust Jesus
Experience prepares us to trust Jesus now
-How did Jesus bless you in the past?
-What life challenges forced you to trust Jesus more?
Observations from Matthew 14:22-23
Jesus “went up on the mountain by himself to pray.”
-Jesus arranged to be alone in prayer, didn’t just happen
-if Jesus needed to pray, how much more do we need to pray!
The disciples faced a life threatening storm
-Mark says they were struggling to row the boat
-note: Jesus sent them into this storm
Jesus came “walking on the sea.”
-Mark says he intended to pass by them
-they were terrified and thought he was a ghost
Jesus said “Have courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
-three phrases of comfort we need in the storms of life!
Peter asked Jesus “Command me to come to you”
-Peter wanted to experience Christ’s power, not just see it
-He was wiling to step out of his “known” safety
Jesus said “Come”
-Jesus answered Peter’s prayer!
-Peter also began to walk on water
-“Attempt great things for God. Expect great things from God.”
Peter looked at the storm and began to sink
-He trusted the circumstances instead of Jesus
-we must keep on stepping out in faith
Jesus rescued him and said “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”
-Jesus loves us enough to tell us the truth!
-Jesus wants us to fully trust him no matter what
-Peter would later be crucified because of his complete trust in Jesus Christ.
The storm stopped and they worshipped Jesus
-they should have been worshiping Jesus already!
-Mark says “their hearts were hardened”, they didn’t fully understand the miracle of feeding the 5,000 just before this.
Step out and trust Jesus
Look for Jesus
-Jesus is in control at all times
-Jesus already sees your struggle
-Call out to Jesus while he may be found
Step out in faith
-Faith in Jesus requires us to leave our personal comfort zone
-We must believe without physically seeing
-Step out when Jesus says to
-Peter asked first, stepped out after Jesus told him to
Stay focused on Jesus
-The first step of faith is often easier than the next ones
How is Jesus commanding you to step out today?
