Parable of the Sower
Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23
Sermons on Matthew 13 Parables (begins today)
Parable = a short story that uses common everyday experiences to illustrate a spiritual truth
-an earthly temporal story about a spiritually eternal truth
-there is usually a common main point to the story
-any secondary points in the story serve the main point
-don’t read too deeply into a parable!
-let the Bible interpret the Bible- (13:18-23 explains 13:1-9)
Questions to ask (when studying the Bible)
What did it mean to the original hearers?
-careful interpretation according to the context back then
What is the underlying timeless truth?
-common implication of the Bible passage for all generations
Where or how could I practice this truth?
-Personal application- what is my next right step?
Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23
God’s Word is scattered generously
-God does not discriminate according to receptiveness
-The atheist, satanist, humanist and hedonist can all hear God’s Word as readily as any genuine spiritual God-seeker.
-this person doesn’t understand the word of God, ignores it
-vs 19 Satan(birds) snatches the seed/word away
-the person is not changed, does not bear fruit
-this person makes a quick and enthusiastic commitment to God’s Word, initially looks like a Christ follower
-vs 21 God’s word does not take root in this person’s life
-distress and persecution causes the person to immediately fall away, proving to not be a true follower of Jesus Christ.
-the word does not bear spiritual fruit in this person’s life
-the word is choked out by a focus on worry and wealth
-the word becomes unfruitful in this person’s life
-vs 23 this person hears and understands the word
-this person produces an amazing amount of fruit!
-this is the only true follower of Jesus Christ
-the Word is supposed to bear fruit!
-Fruitful = Faithful and Fruitless = Faithless
Seek to understand
-ask God to show you what is true and right
-read God’s Word, pray, talk about it with other believers
-don’t let Satan convince you it is too complicated
-respond immediately- you aren’t guaranteed a second chance
Count the cost
-following Jesus may cost you everything in this world!
-Mat 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness
-Mat 6:24 No one can serve two masters…you cannot serve both God and money
-Mat 19:16-30 Rich Young Ruler loved money more than Jesus
-1 Tim 6:10 Rich church members fell away into the world
Hear and apply God’s Word!
-Your faith in Jesus Christ will produce a miraculous crop of spiritual fruit!
-Don’t pay attention to the ¾ of people around you who aren’t living for Jesus Christ!
-Illustration: are you living for a career or reputation?
-career- respected, truly successful, sought out, approved
-reputation- popularity contest, usually ends poorly
What is your next right step?
