How to observe the Lord’s Supper
1 Corinthians 11:17-34
The Lord’s Supper reminds us why we exist!
-To worship Jesus Christ
-To thank Jesus for dying in our place
-To proclaim Jesus until He comes again
How NOT to observe the Lord’s Supper
Vs 18 I hear that when you come together as a church there are divisions among you
-division = literal meaning is tearing or cutting
-church members were not coming to serve others but to sel-indulge with no regard for others
-1 Cor 1:10 Paul began his letter telling them to “all agree and have no divisions among you”
-they were divided along leader personalities
-1 Cor 3:1 Paul called them “people of the flesh…babies”
-vs 19 divisions between mature and immature believers is normal
-however, any naturally obvious division should never be a cause to destroy the unity of our fellowship in Christ!
Vs 20 When you come together then, it is not to eat the Lord’s Supper
-This church stopped focusing on Christ’s sacrifice
-The church stopped focusing on “one another”
Vs 22 …Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing?
-wealthy people were letting poor people go hungry
-they were ignoring Acts 2:44
-John MacArthur: “…when believers come to the table of the Lord…it is absolutely necessary that they leave behind all sin, all bitterness, all racial and sexual prejudice, all class pride, and all feelings of superiority. Of all places and occasions, those attitudes are most out of place at the Lord’s Supper. They grievously profane that holy, beautiful, and unifying ordinance of God.”
How TO observe the Lord’s Supper
Vs 23 …the Lord Jesus took bread
-remember the broken body of Jesus Christ
Vs 25 …he took the cup
-remember that “without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.”
Vs 26 …you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes
-the Lord’s Supper is a public proclamation that we have placed our faith in Jesus Christ.
-a true follower of Jesus Christ will WANT to observe the Lord’s Supper openly and whenever the church gathers to do so
How to PREPARE to observe the Lord’s Supper
Vs 28 Let a person examine himself
-our spiritual and physical parts are connected
-disobeying Jesus negatively affects us, may lead to death
-we must judge ourselves and repent before God steps in and makes us suffer the consequences
Vs 33 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, when you come to eat, welcome one another.
-prioritize meeting together- when you come…assumes we will naturally want to gather
-welcome one another-
-Galatians 3:28 “There is no Jew or Greek, slave or free, male or female; since you are all one in Christ Jesus
As we observe the Lord’s Supper today…
-We invite all followers of Jesus Christ to join us
-Examine ourselves before coming to the table
-Come forward to receive the elements, return to your seats and wait for us all to eat and drink at the same time
