Sermons on Matthew 13 Parables
Parable = a short story that uses common everyday experiences to illustrate a spiritual truth
-an earthly temporal story about a spiritually eternal truth
-there is usually a common main point to the story
-any secondary points in the story serve the main point
-don’t read too deeply into a parable!
-let the Bible interpret the Bible- (13:36-43 explains 13:24-30)
Questions to ask (when studying the Bible)
What did it mean to the original hearers?
-careful interpretation according to the context back then
What is the underlying timeless truth?
-common implication of the Bible passage for all generations
Where or how could I practice this truth?
-Personal application- what is my next right step?
-What does the Bible say about our current events?
Parable of the Wheat and Weeds
Kingdom of Heaven
-the sovereign rule of God over believers and his creation
-God’s kingdom is present now and coming fully when Christ
returns. (already/not yet)
Wheat and Weeds
-Jesus plants the good seed- believers/followers of Christ
-the devil plants bad seed- unbelievers
-“while they were sleeping”- evil operates in the darkness
-“among the wheat”- around believers, in/outside the church
-weeds/unbelievers sometimes look just like believers
-Are you a wheat or weed?
-Matt 13:8 true believers produce obvious spiritual fruit
-Jn 13:35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples
if you love one another.
-Jn 15:8 My Father is glorified by this: that you produce much
fruit and prove to be my disciples.
“Let them both grow together until harvest”
-Believers and unbelievers will co-exist until the end of time
-Wherever humans exist, there will be unbelief!
-Human effort to separate them can hurt believers
-the NT does encourage church discipline but be careful!
-Jesus may be referring to the world at large, not the church
Jesus will separate and judge
-Only Jesus knows our hearts!
-Believers will not have to endure evil people forever
-We must continually shine the light of Christ
-Unbelievers will not coexist with believers forever!
-Judgment is certain
-“blazing furnace”- eternal punishment
-“weeping and gnashing of teeth” = regret and misery
-unbelievers will get what they ask for- banishment from God
-this world makes them think they have it all
-their constant rebellion says they don’t want God at all
“Let anyone who has ears listen”
Trust in Jesus Christ today
-There will be no second chance once Jesus comes to judge
every person who has refused his salvation
Trust Christ’s promise
-Believers will someday “shine like the sun in their Father’s
-We endure evil for just a short time compared to eternity!
Share Jesus with your life and words!
-the only time we can tell people about Jesus Christ and His
forgiveness is before we go to heaven!
-We are in the world, not of the world, to shine the light of Jesus!
