Christmas Promises Part 1: The Virgin Birth
Isaiah 7:14 Luke 1:26-38
What are your plans for Christmas?
-Some have many plans, already scheduled, nice and orderly
-Some are negotiating between multiple families, stressful
-Some don’t have any plans- may enjoy or not enjoy that fact
We often make Christmas promises
-I’ll be home for Christmas
-I’ll get you that special present
-we’ll go to YOUR side of the family this year
The virgin birth was a promise made and kept!
The Promise Made: Isaiah 7:14
-About 700 years before Christ’s birth
-Genesis 3:15 alludes to the virgin birth
-the Jewish nation anticipated a virgin birth
The Promise Fulfilled: Luke 1:26-28
-Matthew 1:22-23 also describes the virgin birth
-John 1:1-18 describes Jesus as God, existing before birth
-Apostle Paul declares Jesus is sinless, a second Adam
-He assumes but does not discuss the virgin birth
If the virgin birth is a myth…
1. We cannot trust the Bible
Millard Erickson "If we do not hold to the virgin birth despite the fact that the Bible asserts it, then we have compromised the authority of the Bible and there is in principle no reason why we should hold to its other teachings. Thus, rejecting the virgin birth has implications reaching far beyond the doctrine itself."
2. We can’t trust Jesus as our Savior
-He didn’t exist before his birth, wasn’t sinless
-Irenaeus (early church father) “if one does not accept [the Son of God’s] birth from a Virgin, how can he accept His resurrection from the dead?”
3. We can’t trust the church
-The church has always believed in the virgin birth
Why our church DOES believe in the virgin birth
1. There is no credible evidence to refute Matthew and Luke
-both accounts are independent- they didn’t corroborate, collude
-the stories do not look “inserted” into their gospel accounts
-early Christians would have quickly rejected the story if untrue
2. We trust the whole Bible
-it is either totally true or not true at all
3. God can do anything!
-If He can raise Jesus from death, he can cause the virgin birth
-If God can’t cause a virgin birth, this casts doubt on his ability
to save us from our sins
“I am the Lord’s servant” Luke 1:38
