Simeon and Anna Find Jesus
Luke 2:30-35, 38
Look for Jesus: lessons from Simeon
1. The Holy Spirit makes us want Jesus
-God revealed to Simeon he would not die until he saw the Messiah.
-We hunger in our hearts for true satisfaction. The things of this world do not provide real fulfillment
-We realize that all of our efforts to be good enough fall short. We still live with the weight of guilt
-We feel powerless to stop doing the things that hurt others and ourselves
-All of these impressions and feelings will either cause us to hunger for God’s solution or drive us deeper into self-dependence and no relief
2. The Holy Spirit leads us to Jesus
-at the perfect time God led Simeon to find Jesus
-The Holy Spirit works today in our world, to draw people to Jesus Christ for salvation. He is at work in this room today!
-We must obey the Holy Spirit to find Jesus. We must stop trying to save ourselves
-We must follow the Holy Spirit while He is still leading us to Jesus! We may never have another opportunity like the present to find Jesus Christ personally.
3. We must look for Jesus as our Savior
-vs 30 “for my eyes have seen your salvation”
-vs 32 “light for revelation to the Gentiles and glory to your people Israel”
-Jesus is the one and only Savior!
-Jesus is the Savior for both Gentiles and Jews- for all who place their faith in Him
Trust in Jesus: the Prophecy of Simeon
1. We will either reject or receive Jesus
-vs 34 this child is destined to cause the fall and rise of many in Israel and a sign to be opposed
-Many Israelites saw Jesus and rejected him (they fell), and eventually crucified him
-Some saw Jesus and believed (they rose up), and were saved
-Jesus revealed who really trusted in God
-We have either placed our faith in Him or rejected Him.
-You may be getting closer to trusting in Jesus Christ, but until you place your faith in Jesus, you stand condemned in front of God and must pay for your sins forever in hell. “I’m getting closer” means I am still totally lost and without hope!
2. Jesus reveals who we really trust in
-vs 35b …that the thoughts of many may be revealed
-Jesus reveals hearts of pride and self-reliance, the desire to feed our flesh.
Openly trust in Jesus: the example of Anna
1. A person who finds and trusts in Jesus will thank God for Jesus!
-vs 38 Anna “began to thank God”
-some people don’t like to be reminded of their sins, that they are trusting in themselves instead of God
-Anna saw Jesus and immediately thanked God! She finally saw the Savior God had promised in the Old Testament
2. A person who finds and trust in Jesus tells others about Jesus!
-vs 38b “and [began to] speak about him to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem”
-We talk about what we love the most
-Anna had friends who were waiting for the Messiah, and she told them about Jesus as soon as she found Him
-How many people do we talk to about Jesus?
